Frequently asked questions - Fractional Non-Ablative Skin Resurfacing

How does StarLux® Fractional Soft Tissue Coagulation System work?

Skin ResurfacingThe Palomar StarLux1540 Fractional™ Laser System delivers light in an array of narrow, focused “microbeams”, to create columns of coagulation (heat) within the skin. The heated tissue within the columns initiates a natural healing process that forms new, healthy tissue. This results in a fresher, more youthful skin tone and texture.

What areas can I have treated?

StarLux Fractional Soft Tissue Coagulation can be applied to any area of the body, including the face, chest, arms, and hands.

What makes StarLux treatments different from other methods?

Some skin treatment devices, such as CO2 lasers, use the ablative method: removing the epidermis and some of the dermis. While a good result is eventually seen, the drawbacks include red and raw skin, and a risk of infection for several weeks after treatment. Other devices use the non-ablative method: sending light pulses into the dermis, while leaving the epidermis intact. This allows quick recovery, but when the light pulses don’t penetrate far into the dermis, the change in skin tone and texture is negligible. StarLux Fractional Soft Tissue Coagulation is the only method which offers both excellent results and no downtime. The Lux1540 beams penetrate deeper into the dermis than any competing device for effective, long-term results. And the Fractional, non-ablative approach stimulates quick healing in the dermis, while leaving the epidermis intact, with no lasting redness. StarLux Fractional  treatments are also easier than those of competing systems, which can involve long prep and clean-up time. Some devices even require that dye to be applied to your skin, which is hard to rinse off afterwards. But StarLux doesn’t require dye or prolonged appointments; treatments are quick and convenient to your schedule.

Are these treatments safe? Are they painful?

Vascular LesionsBy delivering light as individual pulses of microbeams, the Lux1540 protects the skin from the overheating that can result from many other systems. In addition, the Lux1540 features built-in cooling of the skin, so you feel only minor discomfort during treatment.

What should I expect after treatment?

You may experience lingering redness, warmth, swelling, or tightness in the treated area, which generally fades within a few hours of treatment. Generally, you can receive a treatment and go back to work or to other activities without any recovery time. Because the light pulses are confined to narrow columns in the skin, much of the skin is left unaffected and there is a quick healing process; most people notice positive changes in skin tone and texture within a few days. A series of treatments at 4-6 week intervals may be required to achieve the desired results. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – PERMANENT HAIR REDUCTION

How does Palomar pulsed light work?

Palomar Systems use specialized handpieces which filter light from different parts of the spectrum. Each band of the spectrum has a wavelength that is ideal for different treatments, such as hair reduction, sunspot removal, and acne treatment. The Palomar hair removal handpieces emit pulses of light into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair.

How is Palomar pulsed light different from a laser?

Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar, but Palomar Pulsed Light Systems use a much larger lens than lasers. This spreads light over a wider area of skin and allows faster coverage of the skin and quicker treatments as a result. Pulsed light also targets the lighter-coloured hair that lasers are unable to affect.

What body areas can I get treated?

Any area, except around the eyes. The upper lip, face, neck, underarms, bikini line, legs and back can all be treated.

What are Palomar RejuveLux treatments like?

Your treatment provider will move the handpiece over your skin, pulsing it all the while. Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin. A flashing light, an audible tone, and a mild sensation on the skin will tell you when the handpiece is being pulsed.

How does Palomar’s pulsed light work?

Palomar Systems use specialized handpieces which filter light from different parts of the spectrum. Each band of the spectrum has a wavelength that is ideal for different treatments, such as sunspot removal and vessel clearance. The Palomar RejuveLux handpieces emit pulses of light into the skin. The light is absorbed by the pigment in sunspots and the blood in visible vessels, and converted to heat. The heat dissolves the cells that create the pigment and shrinks the vessels.
